Three Key Historical Places In West Africa

The second largest and most populated continent in the world is renowned for its lush jungle safaris and exotic wildlife. But the vast region also has a rich and colourful culture. The western area in particular is filled with significant landmarks and infrastructures. If you ever happen to be in this side of the globe, here are some of the ancient destinations you need to visit:

1. Djenne, Mali

Founded in 800 AD, this city is one of the oldest in the sub-Saharan region. Located on an island near the Niger River Delta, this district was a natural destination for traders who transported their goods between the Sahara Desert and forests of Guinea. Over time, it has also become a centre of learning Islam. The market square is particularly notable because it is where the city’s beautiful and age-old Grand Mosque stands.

2. Ile de Goree, Senegal

This place, located near the country’s capital of Dakar, was once a major worker-trading hub. In fact, the Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves), which was erected by Dutch settlers in 1776, was where these vassals are displayed and eventually picked by their masters. Today, the establishment has been converted into a museum and is open every day except on Mondays. The isle also has a thriving jetty line of fish restaurants.

3. Coastal Forts, Ghana

Many old military stations constructed by various European colonisers during the 17th century were placed along the beaches of Ghana. These citadels were used to store valuables for export such as gold, ivory, and spices. Later, these garrisons were eventually turned into prison dungeons and temporary stopovers for future serfs. Two of the most notable camps are the St. George Castle in Elmina and Cape Coast Museum. These structures served as the base of operations for the British administration for nearly 200 years. Today, some of the forts have now become guesthouses offering basic accommodation.

All of these places have been carefully preserved so that locals and tourists alike will feel the significance these landmarks have on the corresponding region’s culture. When visiting these areas, always remember to give due respect and appreciation.
